The Chalk Garden is a sometimes poignant, often witty, and always intriguing story of human growth and nurturing that won critical acclaim in the early 60's, including a Tony award in 1964. It has proven its timeless appeal throughout the decades since.
The story shares the tale of how a "caring English Nanny bridges gap between Matriarch and precocious teen". When an eccentric gentle-woman interviews for a companion for her granddaughter, with no intentions of hiring anybody, a strange woman applies whose mysterious past intrigues the granddaughter.
"A tantalizing, fascinating and stimulating piece of theatre." • New York Daily News
"A very fresh and personal kind of play with wit, literacy, and an almost unearthly integrity." • New York Herald Tribune

What's Happening
News
Brighton Barn Theatre lost its long time President on May 2nd after a lengthy illness. Art Middleton, or J Arthur as he always liked to be listed in our programs, had been President for as long as most of us can remember.
For almost 20 years, in addition to his presidential duties, Art also produced plays, was our Technical Director, set designer, lighting designer and operator. We have always been blessed that Art and his construction team had our sets "ready to go" so that our casts could rehearse on them as quickly as possible.
Art was truly committed to our Brighton Barn Theatre, having moved from Cobourg to Brighton, just five minutes away from the theatre, when he became President.
Despite his illness, Art last designed the set and lighting for Norm Foster's "Jenny's House of Joy" which ran April - May this 2025 season and was a tremendous success.
His talents and dedication will surely be missed.
